The New England Synod is committed to encouraging and supporting congregations as they develop and implement Safe Church policies and guidelines. Historically, churches have been seen as places of sanctuary and safety. In our culture we can no longer simply assume that this will happen, but must be intentional about providing a framework in which we live together in community where everyone feels safe and nurtured.

Elements of a Safe Church

Safe Kids. Does your church or other affiliated institution have standard, practical, and comprehensive policies designed to protect children from all forms of abuse? Given the vulnerability of children, this is by far the most pressing safety need in our church.

Safe Seniors. Often, the church is at the forefront of regular spiritual care for seniors. Are your clergy and lay ministers aware of the safety needs of seniors, and do they know how to address a reporting situation in a respectful way that meets state statutes?

Safe Sanctuaries and Church Leaders. A healthy congregation or school is one in which boundaries for all people (clergy, laity, students, etc.) are clear and purposeful. Do your people hold one another accountable in a Christlike way for keeping everyone safe and free from potentially harmful boundary violations?"

Synod Sponsored Events

Congregations that participate in Synod sponsored events must agree to follow the New England Synod Youth Protection Policy. Hammonasset is an example of a Synod sponsored event.

Safe Church Training

Every person in the New England Synod that works with children and youth is highly encouraged to attend one of the live training events held throughout the year.  In addition you can now view the two part video "Safe Church Child Safety Training".
